Perseid Meteor Shower Canoe Trip
Come on a nighttime canoeing adventure to view the Perseid meteor showers on the gentle waters of Arcadias Mill River. The Perseids are fast-moving, highly visible summer meteors, which will be peaking around this time. We will also keep our eye out for the resident beavers and great blue herons, and listen for sounds of night-dwelling creatures.

Perseid Meteor Shower
The Perseid meteor shower offers an opportunity to view natures celestial fireworks. The peak of the showers is predicted to be around August 13. The evening starts with an indoor program at the Hampden Town Hall featuring highlights of the August night sky and background information on observing meteors. Then, skies permitting, we will go outdoors to Laughing Brook to look for meteors, identify summer constellations, and continue an exploration of the science and folklore of the night sky. Migrating Nighthawks and Ice Cream
Typically, the last weeks of August through the first week of September is the time to watch the evening skies for migrating nighthawks: acrobatic flying, insect-eating birds. We will meet at Arcadia, learn a bit about the natural history of the birds over a bowl of ice cream, then head outside to view the show We may end up in downtown Northampton, a good place to view the migration.

Invasive Plant Control: Purple Loosetrife
Non-native invasive plants are a major threat to the nature of Massachusetts. These plants grow prolifically, are often of little food value to wildlife, and crowd out native plants. Each year Arcadia battles many of these plants by physically removing them. Join the team to learn about invasive plants and come prepared to work at removing purple loosetrife, a beautiful but very invasive species.

Campers discover the world of nature and their environment through nature hikes, games, and crafts. Firefly campers will have daily natural history themes and an expedition day. Campers will meet together for morning and afternoon circles and will be divided into similar age groups for hiking and group time. Saturday-Morning Bird Walks
The early-morning world of birds is one of beauty and wonder, a pageant of neotropical migrants returning to their wintering grounds. Each walk leader will focus on field identification techniques, flight patterns, field marks, habitat preferences, and songs and calls. The birds we see will change as the fall progresses.

Hawk Watch at Mount Sugarloaf State Reservation
On a good day, hawk migration can be one of the greatest shows of the fall season. This is the time of year when many species of hawks migrate over mountain ranges toward their southern wintering grounds. If weather conditions are right, we should see sharp-shinned hawks, red-shouldered hawks, and American kestrels, as well as nonraptorial species such as shrikes, ravens, and vultures. Monarch Butterflies
September is the month to watch for migrating monarch butterflies. While theyre more commonly seen during the summer, the last batch to hatch in the fall will begin a flight to southern California or Mexico. Come to Arcadia to learn about the life cycle of the monarchs. We hope to observe both caterpillar and butterfly in the field.
